## Overview

Lawrence S. Ting School (also known as Dinh Thien Ly School in Vietnamese), a reputable educational institution under the Phu My Hung Group, has been using **Infor SunSystems 6.2** and **Infor Q&A 10** for its accounting and reporting operations.

However, with Microsoft’s announcement to end support for **Windows Server 2012 R2** and **SQL Server 2012** in **October 2023**, the school faced potential security and operational risks. The existing systems were only compatible up to those versions, meaning no further technical support, bug fixes, or security updates from Microsoft.

Recognizing the importance of maintaining a stable and secure financial system, Lawrence S. Ting School partnered with **TRG International** to upgrade to [**Infor SunSystems 6.4**](https://trginternational.com/solutions/infor-sunsystems/) and [**Infor Q&A 11.3**](https://academy.trginternational.com/courses/iqa-01-infor-q-a-basic), ensuring full compatibility with **Windows Server 2022**, **SQL Server 2022**, and **Office 365**.

- ✓ Future-ready infrastructure for further digital transformation and scalability

## At a glance

In 2006, Phu My Hung Development Corporation initiated a non-profit school project named after Mr. Lawrence S. Ting – the Lawrence S. Ting School – to honor his love for Vietnam and his concern for Vietnamese youth. Today, the school operates two campuses in Ho Chi Minh City: one for middle school and one for high school.

A key advantage in the transition is that the school is already a SunSystems user, having been using the previous version for accounting and reporting. This familiarity with the interface and workflows will minimize onboarding time as the new version – with its advanced features – will be easier for staff to adopt.

## Reading the signals of risk

Being proactive in anticipating risks is essential for safeguarding any organization from negative impacts. Following Microsoft’s announcement of the end of support for **Windows Server 2012 R2** and **SQL Server 2012,** Lawrence S. Ting School immediately analyzed the risks and brought them to the table:

- ✓ **Compatibility risks:** End of support for key Microsoft components exposed the system to potential security vulnerabilities.
- ✓ **Legacy limitations:** Their previous versions (SunSystems 6.2 and Q&A 10) were limited to 32-bit Excel, limiting the use of full computing memory and hindering daily operations.
- ✓ **Infrastructure dependency:** The outdated system posed risks to daily financial management and end-user productivity.

Altogether, these factors made it clear that action was needed right away to ensure seamless operations and avoid a potential breakdown.

## TRG’s approach to solve a challenging problem

TRG International followed **Infor Deployment Methodology (IDM)** to ensure a smooth and structured upgrade, organized into two phases as illustrated below.

![Project Deployment Methodology](https://wpengine.trginternational.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/11/PROJECT-DEPLOYMENT-METHODOLOGY.webp)

Each phase requires a different environment to prevent unexpected issues that could discrupt the school’s operations. Importantly, all servers must be ready prior to any installation; delays on this front will impact the overall schedule.

### Phase 1 – TRIAL UPGRADE (on trial server)

Objective: Assess readiness and validate the upgrade path before the live deployment.

Key actions included:

- ![](https://wpengine.trginternational.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/07/circle-chevron-right-solid-1655C.svg) Begin with detailed system assessments and a migration strategy workshop.
- ![](https://wpengine.trginternational.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/07/circle-chevron-right-solid-1655C.svg) Ensure the school’s internal team performs SQL backups and confirms that the hardware server is qualified and ready for the next steps.
- ![](https://wpengine.trginternational.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/07/circle-chevron-right-solid-1655C.svg) Training and testing cannot be ignored, as they help both sides identify potential risks early and determine mitigation strategies.
- ![](https://wpengine.trginternational.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/07/circle-chevron-right-solid-1655C.svg) Execute test upgrades to [SunSystems 6.4](https://trginternational.com/solutions/infor-sunsystems/) before the live migration to verify data integrity. Concurrently, the TRG team converts Q&A reports and templates provided by the school’s team.

### Phase 2 – PRODUCTION UPGRADE (on production server)

Objective: Perform the live upgrade with careful coordination and risk management.

Key actions included:

- ![](https://wpengine.trginternational.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/07/circle-chevron-right-solid-1655C.svg) The production server transition requires significant effort and close collaboration from both sides. The TRG team provides installation documentation and guides Lawrence S. Ting’s IT team in client-side configuration, with offsite support via Ultraview Remote as needed.
- ![](https://wpengine.trginternational.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/07/circle-chevron-right-solid-1655C.svg) Support UAT and end-user training for up to eight key finance users, lasts over three days in person.
- ![](https://wpengine.trginternational.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/07/circle-chevron-right-solid-1655C.svg) Conduct cutover preparation and a readiness review to ensure a seamless operation.
- ![](https://wpengine.trginternational.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/07/circle-chevron-right-solid-1655C.svg) Reconcile data and resolve any issues that arise before go-live. The final project sign-off then marks the successful completion of the process.

Ongoing communication and project management are necessary. Weekly progress reports keep both teams aligned and informed throughout the duration.
